Our second Employee Spotlight introduces Leigh Campbell. Leigh has been with Dufrain for 5 years, starting his career in marketing before transitioning into a data-focused role. During his time here, Leigh has continued to show his commitment to Dufrain, as well as his passion for storytelling and the culture of the company. In today’s Employee Spotlight, he gives a little insight into his role, his time at Dufrain and his favourite movie.

1. Tell us a little bit about what you do
I am a data consultant here at Dufrain. My job varies depending on the client and project requirements, however, my most recent projects have involved a degree of BI & visualisation and data management.
2. What is your favourite part of your job?
One thing I really enjoy about my job is the initial weeks of working on a new project. I love getting to know the client, the people, their business and the challenges they are trying to solve.
You quickly learn that everyone has their own thoughts and approaches to data and I enjoy taking on these different points of view. The fact that every day is a learning day and the company encourages me to keep developing my knowledge really makes me tick.
3. What does a typical day look like for you?
I wake up and get ready, have a coffee and depending on what day it is, head into the office. It’s not that far away so I enjoy the morning walk which allows me to get in some Audible time. Once I’m at the office, I log in and complete any administrative tasks that have come through.
Every client and project is different but usually, there is a stand-up meeting first thing to set the agenda for the day. I then crack on with the various projects I’m working on, but my final task for the day is always to make a list of my priorities for the next day.
4. Which company value resonates with you the most?
One thing that separates Dufrain from other companies is its culture. There is a real ‘all for one and one for all’ mentality which I haven’t seen in many other organisations. Regardless of where you are based or the position you hold, everyone is eager to help out, engage and share a friendly smile.
5. What would you say has been your most significant achievement whilst working at Dufrain?
My proudest moment was successfully transitioning into data consultancy from marketing. Though I started my career in the marketing department, over time I became more interested in the data analysis that was underpinning most of our marketing campaigns.
I spoke with the MD at the time and with the support of the management team, I was able to train and switch careers. After a lot of hard work, the risk paid off as I am now a data consultant and get to combine my experience from both worlds and apply it to every project.
6. Who inspires you the most within Dufrain?
I would say everyone that I work with because Dufrain is filled with unique people from across the world with different backgrounds and interests. We each have our own stories about how we became a part of Dufrain and what drives us. I really enjoy hearing these stories and learning about the teams’ strengths.
7. Which work benefit is your favourite and why?
The quarterly socials are one of my favourite aspects of working here, especially in the post-lockdown years. The ability to meet colleagues and friends in person and catch up on things other than work is extremely important for our culture.
8. What’s the best advice you can give to someone who wants to work for Dufrain?
Dufrain is a company in which you get out what you put in, so jump in with both feet, network and don’t be afraid to ask the questions you might feel are silly, as there is a high chance that others are wondering the same thing.
9. What skill do you think everyone should learn?
Storytelling and communication skills. Regardless of what industry you work in it is important to be able to communicate ideas. This is especially important in an industry like ours in which not everyone has a background in data or an understanding of the technologies that underpin it. Being able to explain what we do and what that means for clients is invaluable in helping them gain a greater understanding of the opportunities that they have and the impact of their decisions.
10. What is your favourite movie?
My favourite movie is Midnight In Paris, in which Owen Wilson plays an author who is visiting Paris whilst he works on his novel. He is obsessed with the great writers of the 1920s such as Ernest Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein.
He wishes that he was born earlier so that he could have spent time with these greats. One night, this wish is granted and he is sent back to the 1920s and meets all of his idols, but he also meets the woman of his dreams who, similarly, is obsessed with the 1880s era.
After he returns to the modern day, he realises that we are all living in someone else’s golden era, so why not make it our own? This film is a particular favourite because it reminds me to get busy living today.
