Tell us a little bit about what you do?
I’ve worked at Dufrain for over two years as a Microsoft Azure and Fabric Data Architect. I’m usually the first technical person that engages with the client in workshops to evaluate their current data strategy, current data architecture and data processing pain points.
I then formulate and propose a new data platform design using Azure or Fabric.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Watching systems I’ve designed spring to life during the data engineering and report building process. Interrogating the Power BI Reports with live client data at the end of the platform build always feels very rewarding!
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day is not just drawing architecture diagrams on a whiteboard (although I do that frequently!).
I get involved in pre-sales calls, candidate interviews, public speaking engagements and running external client workshops like Fabric Analyst In A Day (FAIAD).
Dufrain encourages its employees to diversify and expand their skillsets – which suits me fine!
Which of our company values resonate with you the most?
Pioneers A Heart – I like to question and challenge the norm. If there is a better way of designing, doing or implementing something – then I’ll see if it works and engage with the team to potentially implement it!
What would you say has been your most significant achievement or the one you are most proud of whilst working at Dufrain?
Implementing Dufrain’s first Microsoft Fabric PoC for a client in March 2024. Getting an early Fabric build onto Dufrain’s portfolio was a big win!
Who inspires you the most within Dufrain?
Difficult to pick an individual at Dufrain but working with and learning from the exceptionally talented people in the Architecture team is a real treat.
Outside of Dufrain? It must be David Goggins who is perhaps the most disciplined person on the planet!
Which work benefit or perk is your favourite and why?
There is a good social scene in the three Dufrain offices. The teams make an effort to meet up after work for a meal, drink and games sessions. It’s usually a good laugh!
What’s the best advice you can give to someone who wants to work for us?
Be prepared to work with a super-smart but very friendly and supportive team. Also, if you like working on varied and cutting-edge projects involving Databricks, Azure or Fabric – then Dufrain is the right company for you!
What skill do you think everyone should learn?
Technical skills in your area of expertise are important but people skills are priceless! Having the ability to communicate openly, honestly and effectively to clients is the number one skill for our consultants.
What are some of your favourite things to do outside of work?
I am a very keen golfer with a handicap of 3.5 (which is pretty good!)
I also play tennis to a much lower standard than my golf – but my son loves it, so I’ll keep trying to improve so he doesn’t beat me (which is inevitable!).
Top movie/book/Band (pick one to note)?
Top movies: The Matrix, Fight Club and American Beauty. Common themes in these films if you watch closely!
