Celebrating Diwali with Family: A Time of Joy and Togetherness

Akhil Vadlakonda, one of Dufrains consultants, shares what Diwali means to him and some of the traditions he shares with his family.

Lighting diyas

This Diwali, I had the joy of celebrating with my family, embracing the traditions that make this festival so special. Diwali is a time for reflection, renewal, and, most importantly, connection with loved ones, and this year’s celebration was no exception.

We began the day with a traditional cleaning of the house, symbolising the removal of negativity and inviting prosperity into our lives. The evening was spent lighting diyas around our home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This simple act of lighting up our surroundings represents the victory of light over darkness—a core belief of Diwali.

As a family, we prepared traditional sweets and savoury dishes, coming together in the kitchen and sharing stories as we cooked. It’s these moments—laughing, cooking, and eating together—that truly make the festival meaningful. Sharing homemade food with neighbours and friends is a cherished tradition that reminds us of the importance of community and togetherness.

Celebrating Diwali

The evening culminated in a small family puja (prayer), where we expressed our gratitude for the blessings of the past year and hoped for continued happiness and health in the year ahead. We also shared gifts, sweets, and lit sparklers with the younger members of the family, filling the night with light and joy.

For me, Diwali is a time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the people around us. Celebrating with family not only strengthens bonds but also reminds us of the core values of the festival—joy, hope, and gratitude. As I carry these values back into my work, I am reminded of the importance of community, whether at home or at the workplace.
